4 Writing Rules for Effective Technology Marketing

Proof, simplify, read, and practice for writing that will get results.

Technology marketing relies on written materials. Honing in on effective writing skills will help make you more confident in your writing and make your marketing initiatives successful.

I have done a good amount of writing in my career; from mailers and print ads to websites, emails and blogs. Almost all marketing initiatives require some element of writing to be effective.

I have developed some rules to getting the writing right. I want to share them with you.

1. Proof, proof, proof.

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to proof your work. Relying on spellcheck to do the job for you will only lead to errors, embarrassment, and possibly loss of business. Always check your punctuation, your word usage, and your consistency. I also suggest you proof everything backwards; reading each paragraph from the last word to the first. This will force you to focus on each word out of context.

When you read in context your mind plays tricks on you, putting in words that aren’t there, switching words and letters so that it reads correctly (you see sytesm, but you actually read system so you never notice it’s wrong). Reading backwards will stop you from doing that.

2. Simplify, simplify, simplify

The technology industry comes with a lot of complex tools and terminology. Try to avoid jargon so the content is easy to read. People will stay focused on your message.

3. Read, read, read

I firmly believe that one gets better with experience and writing is one of the best examples of this. Read as much as you can. Subscribe to newsletters, pick up a newspaper, magazine or book, follow blogs, etc. Exposing yourself to a lot of writing will actually affect how good your writing is.

4. Practice, practice, practice

Write whenever you can. Take each opportunity as a way to grow and develop. Don’t be discouraged. Not getting it on the first try is not a failure.

Thomas Edison said “I figured out 2,000 ways how not to make a light bulb, but only needed to find one way to make it work.” I think the same applies to writing.

The importance of writing can be taken for granted. If you can appreciate the effectiveness of writing in your technology marketing initiatives I believe you will be more successful.

In what ways can effective writing skills help your company’s marketing strategies?
