Why Tumblr Should Be a Player in Your Social Media Technology Marketing

Social media marketing is growing and expanding with our lifestyle and audience. Learn how Tumblr can help you stay ahead of the curve.

Facebook. Twitter. LinkedIn. Pinterest. SlideShare. YouTube. Vimeo. These are the usual suspects when it comes to social media. But there is another player in the game when it comes to marketing your brand that you need to consider. Tumblr.

“Tumblr is a blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes and audio to their tumblelog, a short-form blog. Users can follow other users, or choose to make their tumblelog private” (Google).

Tumblr is taking off for a couple reasons, in my mind.

  1. We have become a visually stimulated society. We prefer to look at the world through images and videos rather than words. An infographic developed by Optimind called 30 Digital Marketing Statistics You Shouldn’t Miss even shows “articles with images get 94% more views than those without,” “videos get 267% more clicks than normal posts,” and “viewers retain 58% of what they see but only 10% of what they read.” Tumblr’s platform is optimized for that type of viewing.
  2. Our audience is changing. While Baby Boomers and Generation X have made Facebook their preferred social media platform, there is the younger generations to consider, as they start to penetrate the consumer world. This audience is not interested with where their predecessors and parents are on social media. They are also used to an instant lifestyle. Tumblr is the answer to both.

I think we can agree you should consider getting your company on Tumblr. But what do you do once you’re there? Here are some ways to establish your brand and capitalize on your Tumblr account.

  1. Built-in tagging and sharing capabilities make you content easy to discover and pass on – really extending your marketing reach.
  2. Content is still key, but with a twist. Marketing in 2013 and beyond is all about interesting content. And I don’t just mean whitepapers and webinars. I mean videos (whether produced or short GIFs from Instagram), photos (no post should go without one), music (add some depth), etc. A clever title isn’t enough; add something to really catch their eye. That will make your content heard!
  3. Connect with others. Tumblr users thrive on sharing. And sharing goes both ways. By following and sharing content from your customer base you show you are listening and appreciate what they are saying. That goes a long way. You also want to try creating content that will bestow an emotional connection. Both will help to make your brand more credible and likeable.

While I think tumblr is important, especially if you plan on having your company around for years to come, don’t drop everything. Tumblr should simply be an added player in your social media marketing team.

It’s funny because I think you should substitute the word Google+ everywhere you mention Tumblr. The reason? You get added SEO and SMM value using Google+ for all the benefits you described for using Google+ that you don’t get with Tumblr.
